In a State of Content Marketing 2022 study by SEMRush, 46% of marketers surveyed said that SEO was the one tactic that brought them the most success.
Essentially, what this means is that if you want your content to be seen, you need to focus on keyword research and search engine optimization. But what are the best tools to help you do that?
There are a lot of different SEO content writing tools out there, and it can be tough to know which ones are worth your time and money.
To help you out, we’ve put together a list of five of the best writing tools for SEO that will help you win more traffic from Google.
Surfer SEO is a tool that helps you optimize your content for Google. It provides you with keyword research and data-driven insights so that you can improve your content writing and rank higher in search results.
Surfer SEO comes with a number of fantastic tools:
- Surfer SEO Grow Flow
- Surfer SEO Content Planner
- Surfer SEO Content Editor
- Surfer SEO Audit
Let’s take a look at each of these in a bit more detail.
Surfer SEO Grow Flow
Grow Flow is Surfer’s AI growth management platform. It provides a weekly data-driven SEO checklist for improving your website traffic.
Here’s a screenshot of some of the tasks Grow Flow is recommending that I do this week:
Surfer SEO Content Planner
Planning content can be super challenging when you’re trying to work out which keywords have enough search volume and are relevant to your target audience.
The Content Planner helps you organize thousands of search phrases into categories so that you can easily target a single piece of content with them.
These are groups of keywords that search engines commonly rank together on the results pages, even though they might not be obvious to the human eye.
You simply enter your target keywords and the Content Planner will provide a list of keyword phrases to guide your content writing and content creation process. You can even filter the results by search intent and search volume.
Here’s a video explaining how to use Content Planner to create a full content strategy outline in minutes:
Seriously, who needs Google keyword planner when you’ve got this SEO content writing tool?
Surfer SEO’s Content Editor is magical for writing new pieces, optimizing old ones, or preparing writer briefs.
This content optimization software will:
- Save you a ton of research time,
- Suggest related keywords,
- Ensure appropriate keyword density is reached
- Prevent you from getting penalized by Google for keyword stuffing,
- Give you a content score out of 100 so you know how optimized your content is
In this video I share how I use Surfer SEO’s Content Editor to write a new SEO-optimized article:
Surfer SEO Audit
The SEO Audit tool eliminates the need for hours of keyword research or identifying what tweaks to make on a piece of content. It’s all been automated. It only takes a minute to complete.
The SEO Audit tool doesn’t just tell you what to do – it shows you how to do it so that you can improve your content and get better rankings on search engines.
Here’s a video explaining how this content optimization tool works:
Another cool feature of Surfer SEO that they recently introduced is the inbuilt plagiarism checker. This neat little tool ensures that your content writing is plagiarism free. Very cool!
Surfer Released a Free Plan to Help Small Businesses Grow
Surfer SEO has just released a free plan to help users with small domains (less than 100 impressions a day) figure out the right content strategy and create optimized content.
You’ll get an automated, weekly list of biggest-impact, yet low-effort, tasks to grow and optimize your domains – for free!
If you continue to publish new articles, and finally, your site will pass the free limit, you can upgrade to use even more of Surfer’s awesome tools to accelerate your traffic growth.
Frase is another AI-driven SEO tool that helps you optimize your content for Google. Whilst it offers some things that Surfer SEO and other tools offer, like an SEO writing assistant, where I find it most useful is helping to create blog post outlines.
All you need to do is enter a target keyword, and then Frase’s Outline Builder tool will show you the headings and sub-headings of all the sites appearing on page 1 of Google for that target keyword.
You can then easily pick and choose which headings to use in your own outline and match the search intent of your target audience.
Below is a screenshot of my wife’s draft outline for a blog post she created on travel journals.
Here’s a quick look at Frase’s outline builder in action:
SEO Writing Tool #3: Jasper AI writing assistant
You’ve got your blog post outline, so what comes next? Writing your blog post!
Now there are two ways to approach this – manually or with some assistance from AI software.
Option A: Write the blog post manually.
Interestingly, a 2022 survey by Orbit Media on how long it takes to write a blog post revealed that the average experienced B2B content writer takes around 4.5 hrs to write a 1400-word blog post. This is consistent with my own experience prior to being introduced to AI writing tools.
Option B: Get some help from ai copywriting tools
This is where Jasper AI comes in.
Jasper has literally halved the time it takes to draft my articles.
Jasper is the leader in AI writing software and has been for a few years now. They’re constantly innovating and improving the product. For instance, their most recent update has been the ability to generate AI art which is pretty neat if you want to generate original images for your content.
Admittedly Jasper is also the most expensive of the tools I’ve seen on the market, but I believe it’s for good reason. The quality of the output, community, and the sheer range of copywriting templates offered to make it stand out.
I recently learned that Jasper has also integrated Copyscape plagiarism checker into its tool, therefore, you can quickly see whether or not the content being generated is indeed unique (and not copied from any website on the internet).
They’ve recently introduced a Starter pricing option that begins at $24/m but to harness the full power of AI writing with the ability to create full-length content, the Boss mode (which starts at $49/m) can’t be beaten.
Want to see if this tool will be as useful for you as it has been for me and many others?
(that’s enough to punch out 10x 1,000-word articles)
Note: AI writing software does not remove the time required to edit and polish the content to make it match my tone of voice, add elements that make it unique (and difficult to copy), etc. So it’s important to keep this in mind. Do not assume that you can just copy and paste whatever Jasper AI gives you onto your website as a final version.
If you want your content to read like it’s been written for humans, this tool will help you do that.
Grammarly is a great tool for catching typos and grammatical errors. It also has a handy feature that allows you to check the readability of your content writing.
It gives your writing a readability score based on the Flesch-Kincaid Reading Ease test. The average reading level in the US is around eighth grade, so aim for a score of 60-70.
Grammarly also offers suggestions for improving your writing style, such as using shorter sentences or breaking up long paragraphs.
If you’re not already using Grammarly, I highly recommend checking it out. It’s free to use and can be installed as a browser extension and used when you’re in Google docs. It works with social media websites too.
I recommend upgrading to Grammarly Premium for its additional features. It’s the ultimate grammar checker and will level up your content quality. Definitely worth it.
So you’ve written and edited your article and are now ready to load it onto WordPress and hit publish it, right?
When you’re so close to hitting publish, wouldn’t it be handy at this point in the process to have somebody check your work and ensure that your article is optimized for search engines?
Well, you’re in luck!
The Rank math SEO plugin is a must-have for any WordPress site. Rank Math assists you in optimizing your post to receive the most organic search traffic possible.
It helps you optimize your content for the specific keyword you’re targeting and provides feedback on things like readability, article length, and more.
Other key features of this plugin include:
- Automatically generates an XML sitemap
- Assists with on page SEO optimization
- Provides real-time suggestions for improving your SEO
- Easy set up of redirections when you change URLs on blog posts and pages on your site. Say bye to broken links!
- Keyword density checker
- Gives you a neat SEO score to let you know how optimized your article is. You should aim for a score of 70+ and green, but if you’re one of those obsessive people who need a score of 100 here’s how you can do it. (note: a score of 100 does not guarantee your article will rank on page 1 of Google as other factors affect page ranking)
It LITERALLY tells you what’s good and what needs improvement. How cool is that?
A popular alternative to Rank Math SEO is the Yoast SEO plugin. Here’s a comparison between the two tools.

Of course, the best content writing tools alone won’t guarantee marketing success.

- Consistent publishing schedule with new content added regularly
- Use of keywords and other search engine optimization techniques throughout your website
