Stop Calling It a Discovery Call: Why Prospective Clients Cringe—and What to Do Instead

You’re busy. Your inbox dings with an invitation: “Join me for a free discovery call!” Instantly, your shoulders tense.

A discovery call? You picture a generic Zoom meeting where someone probes you with scripted questions, then corners you into a sales pitch. You hover over the decline button, wondering why you’d waste 30 minutes of your life being “discovered” when you just need solutions.

Sound familiar? That’s how your prospective coaching clients feel, too.

Why Buyers Hate “Discovery” Calls

Most people don’t wake up thinking, I can’t wait to hop on a discovery call today! They’re sceptical for good reason:

  • Time-Consuming: They dread sitting through a lengthy call that feels unproductive, and where they’re getting sold to. This is a high-risk proposition for them.
  • Sales Pressure: They fear being pushed into a commitment they’re not ready for.
  • Vague Value Proposition: The purpose of the call often feels unclear—what’s in it for them?
  • Repetitive Information: They’re annoyed at repeating details they’ve already shared in emails or forms.
  • Lack of Personalisation: A cookie-cutter approach makes them feel like just another lead, not a valued individual.

Discovery calls are named from the seller’s perspective i.e. I want to “discover” what problems you have so I can sell you on something. The name “discovery call” doesn’t exactly say “I care about the customer’s perspective”, does it?

It’s no wonder “discovery call” sounds more like a chore than a helpful step forward.

What Clients Actually Want

Here’s the good news – You don’t have to ditch these calls entirely. Instead, you can reframe them into something your prospective clients will want to say yes to. The secret? Make it valuable and focused on them—not your sales pipeline.

How to Rebrand the “Discovery Call”

The key to making these calls successful is rebranding them into something that feels collaborative, valuable, and specific to the client’s needs. Here’s how:

  • Focus on Strategy: Make the session about solving their specific challenges, offering actionable advice they can implement immediately.
  • Provide Immediate Value: Ensure they leave the call with tangible takeaways, like new perspectives, clarity, or practical next steps.
  • Frame It as a Collaboration: Highlight the mutual benefit of the call, sharing insights and potential solutions while learning about their needs.
  • Personalise the Experience: Tailor the session to their unique circumstances to show you genuinely understand and care about solving their challenges.

By focusing on value, collaboration, and personalisation, you shift the call from a sales pitch to a meaningful, results-oriented conversation.

5 Alternative Names for Your Discovery Call

Sometimes, all it takes is a name change to transform how prospects perceive your call. Here are some fresh, value-driven alternatives:

  • Strategy Session: Signals that the call is focused on uncovering strategies to solve their specific challenges.
“Let’s uncover strategies to overcome [specific challenge] and boost your results.”
  • Clarity Call: Emphasises providing clear next steps and removing confusion around their goals.
“By the end of this call, you’ll have a clear path forward on [specific issue].”
  • Insight Exchange: Positions the call as a collaborative dialogue where you both gain value.
“Let’s trade ideas and explore solutions to move you closer to [desired outcome].”
  • Action Plan Call: Highlights the creation of a tailored roadmap to address their challenges.
“We’ll create an actionable plan to address [specific challenge] and achieve your goals.”
  • Momentum Meeting: Inspires excitement by focusing on building progress toward their goals.
“This is all about identifying the next steps to build momentum toward [goal].”

Pre-Call Prep: Build Trust Before You Even Speak

One way to set your calls apart is through preparation. Show prospects the value upfront by sharing a clear agenda or topics to be covered. This ensures they see the potential benefits before the call even begins. For example:

“Here’s what we’ll cover during the call:

  1. Your current challenges and opportunities
  2. Tailored solutions and actionable advice
  3. Next steps to move you forward”

When prospects know what to expect, they’re more likely to view the call as a worthwhile investment of their time.

An Example of What We’re Talking About

One of my mentors, Taki Moore of Million Dollar Coach, perfectly exemplifies how to reframe a discovery call into something valuable and action-oriented. Taki offers a 15-Minute Growth Plan Call, and his booking page sets the expectation with crystal-clear benefits:

“In this fast-paced, 15-minute growth plan, we’ll help you:
Find Your Biggest Bottleneck: We’ll pinpoint the one thing blocking your growth and holding you back.
Optimise Your Offer: Quick audit of your niche, pricing, and offer to uncover untapped opportunities.
Map Out Your Next Steps: Leave with a 3-step, actionable plan to ramp up leads, clients, and revenue fast.”

Notice the focus on tangible outcomes, time efficiency, and specificity. It’s not a generic sales pitch—it’s a clear, high-value session designed to deliver immediate results. This kind of structure and clarity makes prospective clients eager to say yes.
